With fall right around the corner, an influx of great sports to watch will be thrown upon us shortly. We’re just a month away from the start of the NFL regular season, two months away from the MLB postseason and the first puck drop of the NHL season. Anyone lucky enough to have a man cave in their basement has a lot to look forward to.
For anyone on the fence about turning their cellar into a man cave, hopefully, this blog about the three playoff baseball matches that we are looking to see will help you pull the trigger on installing one this fall.
Boston Red Sox (Currently 63-49, 1st in AL East) vs. Cleveland Indians (Currently 59-50, 1st in AL Central) – After an impressive 93-win season with a plus-183 run differential, the Boston Red Sox were a strong contender to win the World Series. However, former Red Sox skipper Terry Francona and his Cleveland Indians shocked the baseball world by sweeping the Red Sox in three games. Both teams have suffered their share of injuries so far this season, but both still remain in the lead in their respective divisions. The addition of Chris Sale (13-4, 2.70 ERA) and this year’s third best ERA in baseball at 3.71 can be a big obstacle in the way of Francona and the Tribe, who look to advance to the World Series for the second consecutive year.
Washington Nationals (Currently 66-49, 1st in NL East) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (79-32, 1st in NL West) – Despite the Houston Astros stealing most of the spotlight for the first three months of the season, no one in baseball has been better than the Dodgers since July 1. The emergence of Alex Wood (13-1, 2.33 ERA) and the always trusty three-time Cy Young Award-winner Clayton Kershaw (15-2, 2.04 ERA) have helped lead the Dodgers to a major league leading 79 wins so far. Trade deadline acquisition Yu Darvish (7-9, 3.81 ERA) shined in his first start with the Dodgers, beating the New York Mets by going seven scoreless innings and giving up three hits while notching 10 strikeouts. Last year’s NLDS matchup between the Dodgers and Nationals could not have gotten any tighter with the series going the distance and three of the five games being decided by one run. A rematch this year in October will feature the two best teams in the NL and two teams that can easily win it all.
Houston Astros (Currently 71-40, 1st in AL West) vs. Kansas City Royals (Currently 57-54, 2nd in AL Central) – After missing the playoffs in 2016 and starting 2017 with a 7-16 record in April, many experts started to write off the 2015 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals. Since then, the Royals have been the best team in their division since June. Currently second in the AL Central, the Royals still have plenty of work to do before they start to anticipate playoff matchups. If the Ned Yost-led Royals can find a way to extend their season to October, a possible rematch of the 2015 ALCS matchup with the Houston Astros can be a big possibility. Houston’s juggernaut offense led by AL-MVP candidate Jose Altuve (.364 BA, 16 HR, 63 RBI, 24 SB) is looking like a team on a mission to win it all after falling so short in 2015 to Kansas City. October is looking to shape up into a great month of baseball regardless of matchup.
